SEIS is an independent statutory inspection provider, carrying out thorough examinations on lifting, pressure and work equipment. Compliance under LOLER, PUWER, PSSR and COSHH, delivered by engineer surveyors who work to tolerance, not guesswork.
A thorough examination is a detailed, systematic inspection of equipment carried out at set intervals by a competent person, to confirm it is safe to keep using. It is a statutory requirement under LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998 and PSSR 2000, and it is not the same as routine maintenance or a quick visual check.
The examination looks for defects, wear, corrosion and faults that could cause the equipment to fail in use. Where defects are found, they must be reported and the equipment taken out of service until it is safe. Every examination produces a written Report of Thorough Examination, which is your legal proof of compliance.
Carried out by a competent person
Someone with the practical and theoretical knowledge to detect defects and judge their importance, independent enough to report them objectively.
Required at set intervals
Typically every 6 or 12 months depending on the equipment, or in line with a written scheme of examination. The breakdown is shown alongside.
Non-compliance carries real risk
Operating without a valid report can mean prosecution, invalidated insurance, and the danger of equipment failure. The legal duty sits with the operator.
How often is it required?
Statutory minimum intervals under LOLER 1998
6 MONTHS
Equipment used to lift people, and all lifting accessories (slings, chains, hooks).
12 MONTHS
All other lifting equipment, such as cranes, hoists and fork lift trucks.
Or in line with a written scheme of examination drawn up by a competent person, where one applies.
LOLER 1998
Lifting equipment thorough examinations
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
LOLER places a legal duty on anyone who owns or operates lifting equipment at work. Every item, from a simple sling to a mobile crane or passenger lift, must be thoroughly examined at set intervals by a competent person to confirm it is safe to use.
Our engineer surveyors examine the structural integrity, mechanical function and safety devices of your lifting equipment, then issue a Report of Thorough Examination documenting any defects or recommendations, your legal proof of compliance. We work nationwide, with established local coverage across Cambridgeshire, County Durham, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire.
And any other machinery used to raise, lower or suspend a load.
PUWER 1998
Work equipment inspections
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
PUWER places duties on anyone who owns, operates or controls work equipment, requiring it to be suitable for its intended use, safe, and maintained in good working order. Where equipment poses a risk, it must be inspected at suitable intervals by a competent person.
Our engineer surveyors assess the suitability, condition and safety of your work equipment, checking guarding, controls, wiring and structural condition, then issue a clear PUWER assessment report setting out any defects and recommendations. We work nationwide, with established local coverage across Cambridgeshire, County Durham, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire.
Plus pallet trucks, ladders, hand tools, stillages and more.
PSSR 2000
Pressure system thorough examinations
Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000
PSSR governs systems that store or release energy under pressure, from a small workshop air receiver to a steam boiler. If a pressure system fails, the consequences can be severe, so the regulations require it to be examined against a written scheme of examination by a competent person.
The written scheme of examination comes first
Unlike LOLER, PSSR requires a written scheme drawn up by a competent person before examination. We can prepare yours, then examine to it.
Our engineer surveyors then examine the system at the intervals the scheme sets, checking vessels, fittings and protective devices, and report any defects that affect safe operation. We work nationwide, with established local coverage across Cambridgeshire, County Durham, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire.
Plus refrigeration plant, jacketed pans, blow-down vessels and more.
COSHH / LEV
LEV & fume extraction examinations
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
Where a workplace uses Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) to control dust, fume, mist or vapour, COSHH requires that system to be examined and tested to confirm it still controls the hazard effectively. This covers fume cupboards, dust extraction, spray booths, welding hoods and downdraught benches.
14MONTHS
Most LEV systems need a thorough examination and test at least every 14 months, a different statutory interval to the lifting and pressure regimes.
Our engineer surveyors measure the system’s performance against its design, check capture and airflow, and report whether it is controlling exposure as it should, with clear actions where it is not. Our LEV testing covers Cambridgeshire, County Durham, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire and the surrounding area, with wider coverage available on request.
