What we do

Independent thorough examinations that prove compliance

A thorough examination is a detailed, systematic assessment of equipment by a competent person, at set intervals, to confirm it is safe to keep using. It is a legal requirement across several UK regimes, and it is not the same as routine maintenance or a quick user check.

SEIS carries out these examinations on lifting, pressure and work equipment, as well as local exhaust ventilation, then issues the written report that is your evidence of compliance. Because we are independent of any maintenance or insurance arrangement, every assessment is based purely on sound engineering judgement.

The legal duty stays with you
Outsourcing the examination does not transfer the duty. The responsibility for safe, examined equipment sits with the duty-holder, the employer, owner or operator, not the inspection contractor. Our job is to give you the independent evidence that you have met it.
  • Competent engineer surveyors
Examinations carried out by people with the practical and theoretical knowledge to detect defects and judge their importance, and independent enough to report them objectively.
  • A written report every time
Each examination produces a report listing condition, any defects, the action required and the next due date, the document the HSE will expect to see.
  • One provider across four regimes
Lifting, work equipment, pressure systems and LEV, examined and scheduled together, so nothing slips through the gaps between separate contractors.

FAQs

Statutory inspection questions, answered

The questions duty-holders ask us most about thorough examinations and statutory inspections. If yours isn’t here, our engineer surveyors are happy to help.

What is a statutory thorough examination?

A thorough examination is a detailed, systematic assessment of equipment carried out by a competent person at set intervals, to confirm it is safe to keep using. It results in a written report and is required by law under regimes such as LOLER, PUWER, PSSR and COSHH. It is not the same as routine maintenance or a quick user check.

Which inspections does my business actually need?

It depends on the equipment you own, operate or control. Lifting equipment falls under LOLER; general work equipment and machinery under PUWER; pressure systems such as air receivers and boilers under PSSR; and local exhaust ventilation under COSHH. Many sites need more than one. Tell us what you run and we will confirm which regimes apply and what is due.

Why use an independent inspection provider?

The competent person carrying out a statutory examination should be sufficiently independent and impartial to make objective decisions. Because SEIS has no maintenance or insurance tie-in, there is no conflict of interest, so every report is based purely on sound engineering judgement, in line with HSE guidance.

Who is responsible if I outsource the examination?

The legal duty stays with you. Outsourcing the examination does not transfer the responsibility, which remains with the duty-holder, the employer, owner or operator. Our role is to give you the independent examination and the written report that prove you have met that duty.

How often do statutory examinations need to be done?

Intervals vary by regime and equipment. As a guide, lifting accessories and equipment that lifts people are examined at least every 6 months, other lifting equipment at least every 12 months, PUWER inspections are risk-based, and LEV under COSHH is typically examined every 14 months. PSSR intervals are set by a written scheme of examination. We confirm the right schedule for each item.
