The Basics;

The regulations outline two main types of inspections: Pre-use inspections and thorough examinations. Pre-use inspections are typically carried out by the operator before each use of the equipment to check for visible damage or faults. On the other hand, a thorough examination is a more detailed assessment conducted by a competent person. These examinations often include checks for structural integrity, wear and tear, mechanical functionality, and safety features. The findings from a thorough examination are documented in a report, which is retained for legal and safety purposes. If any issues are identified during these examinations, the equipment must be repaired or replaced before it can be used again.

Employers are responsible for ensuring that lifting equipment is examined and maintained according to LOLER requirements. Non-compliance with LOLER can lead to significant fines, legal liabilities, and, more importantly, an increased risk of workplace accidents.
